Applying for your first driver's license
Priority for new graduates
Did you get your driver's license? Then you probably want to get on the road as soon as possible. We make every effort to receive you the next working day to apply for your first driving license.
Please note: are you already in possession of a driving license AM (moped, scooter, moped)?
Then this is not a first driving license but category extension. You can easily apply for this online.

You can also make a Make an appointment appointment online for your first application. Priority is not possible in that case.
Make an appointment
- Bring with you to the appointment:
- color passport photo: not older than six months + meets the passport photo requirements
- valid identification document
- cash/pin card: you pay at the time of application
- under 18 years of age: a companion pass (to be requested via 2todrive)
Pick up driver's license
5 working days after the application, you can pick up your driver's license at City Hall.
Do this within 3 months, otherwise you will have to reapply for a driver's license.
Opening hours for pickup
You do not need to make an appointment to pick up your driver's license.
Except for special/holidays, this can be done at the following times:
- Monday through Friday 10:00-12:30 a.m.
- Wednesday 2:30-7:00 p.m.
Rush request
Driver's licenses applied for urgently before 2:30 p.m. can usually be picked up the next business day (officially this allows 48 hours).
This is not possible online but only at the counter. Please make an appointment for this by phone at 040-2631631.
For an urgent application, you pay an additional €39.65.
Change appointment
Changing/canceling an appointment can be done via the confirmation email you automatically receive after making an appointment.
License renewal/category extension at the counter
Is it not an initial application but a renewal or category extension of your current driver's license? Then this is also possible by appointment at the counter of the town hall. Your new license will then be ready 5 working days later.
Bring with you to the appointment:
- color passport photo: not older than six months + meets the passport photo requirements
- valid identification document
- money/pin card: you pay at the time of application
Driving license validity
A standard moped or car license is basically valid for 10 years. This changes from your 65th birthday or when you need a medical examination:
- 65-70 years: your driver's license is renewed until your 75th birthday
- 70-75 years: your license will be renewed for 5 years
- from 75 years of age: your driving license remains valid for up to 5 years (depending on medical examination)
- all ages: in case of mandatory medical examination due to illness: depending on the examination

- Missing persons fee: €24.50 (no charge if communicated online in advance )
- Health certificate: € 44.50
