License renewal or category extension

Renewing your driver's license is easily arranged online. If you have passed an additional category on your driver's license (such as bus or truck) then you can also easily arrange this category extension online. The advantage of renewing online is that your driving license is ready 2 working days later. 

License renewal 

  • Step 1: Check if you meet the Requirements 

  • Step 2: Take a passport photo

    Have a passport photo taken by a certified photographer at and bring your driver’s license with you.
    The photographer will send your passport photo and signature digitally to the RDW.
    Within a few minutes, you will receive an email from the RDW stating whether your renewal application has been approved. 
     

  • Step 3: Request a renewal (no appointment needed)

    Next, apply online to renew your driver’s license with the RDW.
    You will need a DigiD to do this. At the end of the application process, you will pay the fees via iDEAL|Wero.

  • Step 4: pick up driver's license 

    You will receive an email from the RDW when your driver’s license is ready.
    This usually takes 2 business days.
    You can then pick up your driver’s license without an appointment. Please do so within 3 months; otherwise, you will need to submit a new application.
    Don’t forget to bring your current driver’s license with you.


    Except on holidays, you can do this during the following hours:

    • Monday through Friday 10:00-12:30 a.m.
    • Wednesday 2:30-7:00 p.m.

Expanding categories 

  • Step 1: Check if you meet the Requirements 

  • Step 2: Take a passport photo

  • Step 3: Request additional category(ies) 

    Next, apply online to the RDW to add a category to your driver’s license.
    You will need a DigiD to do this. At the end of the application process, you will pay the fee via iDeal.

  • Step 4: pick up driver's license (without appointment)

    You will receive an email from the RDW when your driver’s license is ready.
    This usually takes 2 business days.
    You can then pick up your driver’s license without an appointment. Please do so within 3 months; otherwise, you will need to submit a new application.

    Except on holidays, you can do this during the following hours:

    • mornings: Monday to Friday between 10:00-12:30 a.m.
    • Afternoon/evening: Wednesday between 2:30-7:00 p.m.

Rush request 

An urgent application is not possible online. For this you can go to the counter of the town hall. 

To do so, make an appointment by phone at 040-2631631. 

Driving licenses applied for urgently before 2:30 p.m. are usually ready the next working day (officially this is 48 hours). You pay an additional €39.65 for this. 

License renewal/category extension at the counter

Renewing your driver's license or expanding your categories is also possible by appointment at the City Hall front desk. Your new driving license will be ready 5 working days later.

Driving license validity

A standard moped or car license is basically valid for 10 years. This changes from your 65th birthday or when you need a medical examination: 

  • 65-70 years: your driver's license is renewed until your 75th birthday 
  • 70-75 years: your license will be renewed for 5 years 
  • from 75 years of age: your driving license remains valid for up to 5 years (depending on medical examination) 
  • all ages: in case of mandatory medical examination due to illness: depending on the examination
