Traffic access Nuenen West
The construction of the Nuenen West residential area requires good traffic access: how will we handle traffic in the district, both within the district and in/out of the district? The traffic structure has been laid down in the Nuenen West zoning plan and we are now going to implement it.
Traffic calmed district Nuenen West
To establish Nuenen West as a low-traffic residential area, the City Council adopted the Nuenen West Realignment zoning plan in March 2021. This also established the traffic structure with various closures for motorized traffic (knips). For example, it was decided that the Opwettenseweg will be closed. This is because the Opwettenseweg is now very unsafe and much too busy with car traffic and would become much busier in the future, partly due to the construction of new housing. The road will be modified into a bicycle street, as part of the Gemert - Laarbeek - Nuenen - Eindhoven express bicycle route. To prevent traffic from looking for a way through the residential area, there will be more cuts. The avenue through the Panakkers will not connect to the Opwettenseweg. Car traffic from one part of Nuenen West (now under construction) will have to enter and leave the district via Europalaan. The other part will have to go via Wettenseind to Geldropsedijk. Cyclists will have a direct and safe route between Nuenen and Eindhoven. Exactly where and how Opwettenseweg will be closed is not yet known. We are discussing this with those involved. We are also talking to residents and businesses about how Opwettenseweg can best be designed as a bicycle street.
Traffic livability and accessibility measures
In early April 2025, the municipality of Nuenen - together with neighboring municipalities and the province - signed the Administrative Agreement (BOK) for the express bicycle route between Gemert and Eindhoven. This agreement contains agreements on the financing and realization of the express cycle route. The express cycle route will be constructed by the municipality (as part of the package of traffic liveability and accessibility measures). Part of the express cycle route lies in Nuenen West, which means that the realization of that part will be done by BPD, the developer of Nuenen West. The northern part of the Opwettenseweg cycle street and the rest of the Gemert - Eindhoven express cycle route will be tackled at a different pace in the coming years as part of the Traffic Livability and Accessibility Measures project. That package of measures also includes the Geldropsedijk - N270 connection for motorized traffic. For many residents this is an alternative route for the closed Opwettenseweg.
Housing progress
On May 28, 2025, the Council of State issued an interim ruling on the Nuenen West zoning plan: it also approved the proposal to close off Opwettenseweg. However, the municipality still needs to substantiate a number of points further. For now it means that we can proceed with the elaboration of the car-free street and the closure of the Opwettenseweg. We will start with participation, design and preparation. If we were to wait, BPD would not yet be able to build part of Nuenen West. This is because cables and pipes and sewers need to be laid so that the construction of phase 2 Nuenen West can go ahead.
