Nuenen Asylum Seekers' Center
Nuenen is a welcoming community for people who have fled conflict zones and unsafe countries and need our help. We ensure that they are taken in. On September 8, 2026, the asylum seekers’ center (AZC) on Pastoorsmast in Nuenen will open. The AZC is managed by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA). The municipality has made agreements with the COA regarding this matter. The AZC will provide shelter for 159 people for a period of 5 to 10 years.

The AZC, a neighborhood in our village
At the front of the grounds, on the side of the Pastoorsmast, there is a support building housing the reception area and office spaces. These are used by the COA, security personnel, and organizations such as Vluchtelingenwerk, the GGD (Municipal Health Service), and the general practitioners from Gezondheidszorg Asielzoekers (GZA). There are also spaces for relaxation and socializing, where residents can participate in various activities. Finally, the Meedoenbalie is located here. There, asylum seekers receive assistance in their search for (volunteer) work.
At the back of the property are two three-story residential buildings with simple apartments for 2 to 6 people. Each apartment has a bathroom and a kitchen, so residents can cook for themselves. There is a communal outdoor area with a small lawn and playground equipment.

Residents
The asylum seekers’ center will soon provide shelter to refugees from various countries. They have come to the Netherlands in search of a safe place to rebuild their lives. They are currently going through the asylum admission process. Some residents already have a residence permit or status and are therefore allowed to stay in the Netherlands. They will live in the asylum seekers’ center until housing becomes available for them in the region.
The composition of the group of people at the AZC is the same as that of the group of people living at the registration center in Ter Apel. No unaccompanied minors or people with a psychiatric diagnosis are admitted to the AZC. The COA arranges for them to be accommodated at other locations.
Education
School-age children living in the asylum seekers’ center attend regular classes at schools in the surrounding area. This helps them integrate into our society. We are in discussions with schools about the options and are working to ensure a balanced distribution of students among the schools.
Building a Future Together
We want to help people get involved in the municipality of Nuenen as quickly as possible. This includes: school, volunteer work, paid employment, sports and club activities, and language classes. We do this in collaboration with partners and volunteers. People enjoy being part of their local community, and these activities help them do just that. The municipality encourages connections among all residents.
Outside of work, school, and activities, residents can plan their own days independently. They do their own grocery shopping, cook for themselves, and are responsible for cleaning their own living spaces. Residents receive a living allowance for this purpose.
Volunteer
Would you like to volunteer to help people at the asylum seeker center (AZC)? Check Requirements COA website Requirements opportunities and Requirements : https://www.coa.nl/nl/vrijwilligerswerk. Please keep in mind that volunteers will not be needed immediately after the AZC opens. After arriving, the residents first need some time to settle in, and the COA team needs to get to know them well and begin providing support. We expect there will be a need for volunteers starting in October.
You can already sign up to be a volunteer. To do so, send an email to fmznuenen@coa.nl. The staff at the Meedoenbalie at the AZC will then contact you starting in early September.
Communication and Engagement at the Asylum Seekers' Center
The COA regularly organizes a neighborhood consultation meeting. The purpose of these meetings is to maintain dialogue, share experiences, and foster mutual understanding among residents during the years the asylum seekers’ center is in operation. This ensures open lines of communication between the center’s neighbors, the COA, the police, and the municipality. The first neighborhood consultation meeting took place on July 8, 2026. The next neighborhood consultation will take place a few weeks after the asylum center opens. The COA will organize these meetings as often and for as long as the participants deem necessary.
Starting when the asylum seekers' center opens, the COA will publish a newsletter for those interested. More information on this will follow after the opening.
On the COA website, you’ll find a wealth of information about daily life in an asylum seekers’ center and the COA’s reception and support services for refugees: www.coa.nl.
Safety
The municipality has drawn up a Security Plan in consultation with the COA and the police. Staff are on duty 24 hours a day at the reception desk of the asylum seekers’ center. COA professionals are present from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and on weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The rest of the time, security guards are on duty to handle reception and emergency response duties, as well as conduct patrols. The COA can be contacted regarding reports from the surrounding area. If they receive such reports, they can also discuss them with the residents. You can find the contact information at the top of this page. In case of an emergency, please call the police.
