Work for healthy water flow in Lobroec

A beaver lives in the Lobroec area. The beaver is a native mammal and feels at home in Dutch waters. The beaver is a protected species and an addition to the fauna already present. We must not disturb its habitat.

Beaver nuisance
Unfortunately, the beaver also creates nuisances. The beaver cuts down trees and digs in dikes. As a result, trees fall into the water, causing blockages. The water then cannot flow properly. To prevent problems, we are going to remove some trees.

Which trees will be uprooted?
The choice of exactly which trees will be uprooted will be carefully coordinated with the water board, ecologist and municipality to ensure that it is in line with nature and environmental protection. Only trees that are too close to the water and could fall into the stream will be uprooted. Many other trees will simply remain.

Permit and planning
Because the beaver is protected, the Water Board applied for a permit from the province of North Brabant. The province has granted this permit. The work must be done quickly because the permit is only valid for a short time.

What does this mean for the beaver?
The disturbance to the beaver remains as minimal as possible. Much of the wood remains. The beaver can gnaw on this and then have to cut down fewer trees. Thus, the disturbance is reduced.

When is the work?
Work will begin in Week 6. Do you have any questions? Please contact the municipality on the general telephone number (040) 2631 631.
