Reconnaissance to Gulbergen for refugee reception
There is a national crisis in asylum reception. There is too little space for the reception of Ukrainians, crisis shelter for asylum seekers and the housing of people who have already received a residence permit but are still waiting for housing. The Safety Region Brabant-Zuidoost is working on this issue and has asked all 21 municipalities in the region for possible locations for reception or housing of asylum seekers and/or status holders. In that process, Gulbergen estate was eventually named as the preferred alternative.
The Safety Region therefore asked if Nuenen would be willing to conduct a reconnaissance, investigating how 500 people could be housed at Gulbergen. And they said yes.
That Gulbergen is being considered is not surprising, by the way, since that location was also in the picture seven years ago for housing 1,200 asylum seekers.
Many questions
It is part of the reconnaissance to determine a precise location, see what housing might look like, how finances will be arranged and what amenities would be needed. What is certain in any case:
- The location is on Gulbergen estate, on Nuenen territory.
- It involves, it has been requested, multi-year housing. That is, a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 10 (longer than 10 years is called permanent housing).
- It involves housing up to 500 people; thoughts are of small-scale housing units.
It goes fast
As mentioned, the stalled asylum shelter is a national crisis. So speed is of the essence. Moreover, we don't need to reinvent the wheel: there are experiences from other municipalities and COA, for example, that we are grateful to draw on. So the exploration can go quickly.
