Registering marriage/registered partnership
(Your reservation is not final until you receive a confirmation of this by mail)
Notification of intended marriage/partnership
- Register your marriage/registered partnership in the municipality where the ceremony will take place.
- If this is in Nuenen then you can notify us online. In the online form you can indicate your preferences (date, location, time).
- If you do not live in the Netherlands then your notification will go through the municipality of The Hague.
- Until 2015, this notification was done in person and was called betrothal. The current "notification of intended marriage/partnership" is done digitally in most cases.
Number of witnesses
Witnesses must be present at a marriage and a registered partnership.
- Together, you choose a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 witnesses.
- Your witnesses must be 18 years of age or older.
Marriage/partnership as a non-Dutch national
Do you want to report a proposed marriage/partnership, but 1 of both partners does not have the Dutch nationality? Then additional physical documents are required that cannot be submitted online. The documents required vary per situation.
Contact us by phone at 040 - 263 16 31 or send an email to burgerzaken@nuenen.nl so we can review with you what you need.
Required with your application
To notify your intended marriage or registered partnership online, you and your partner need DigiD. If you do not yet have a DigiD, apply for one first via the DigiD website.
Please have the following information handy with your report :
- Valid identification of both partners,
- valid identification of the witnesses
(identity card, passport or Dutch driver's license), - date and time,
- wedding venue.
Please note that the date is not final until you receive the confirmation letter in the mail from us.
Converting registered partnership to marriage
Those who have entered into a registered partnership once can convert their partnership into a marriage. The other way around is not possible: a marriage cannot be converted to a registered partnership. The difference with a regular marriage is that it requires witnesses, but in a conversion this is not the case. This only requires the signatures of both partners.
Converting a registered partnership into a marriage can be done in any Dutch municipality.
Signing the conversion certificate is free of charge. If you would like to do this during a wedding ceremony (including speech by a wedding officiant) you will pay the regular wedding fee for this.
To convert a registered partnership into a marriage, make an appointment by phone at 040-263 16 31, or send an email to burgerzaken@nuenen.nl.
