House number application
Directly arrange
Every home and commercial building in the Netherlands is required to have an address. The municipality ensures that these premises have a house number. These are addresses of objects from the Basic Registration of Addresses and Buildings (the BAG). We also take care of changing and revoking house numbers.
A new (house) number can be assigned at:
- new construction;
- division or amalgamation of a building;
- renumbering of a building.
Requirements
You can apply for a house number if you own:
- An addressable object that does not yet have a (house) number designation,
- A building with a (house) number designation that consists of several independent parts.
Not just any property gets a house number. It must be a residential object, pitch or berth. The following Requirements apply to the property:
- A private access from the public road, a yard or a shared access. For example, a stairwell, porch or gallery.
- A private entrance door that can be locked inside and out.
- The property can be sold or leased independently.
- Depending on its use, the property should have amenities such as a bathroom, a toilet and a kitchen.
Environmental Permit
Do you have building or renovation plans and want to know whether they require a permit? Do a permit check via the Omgevingsloket. When dividing a house, office or business space, you usually need a permit. If the permit is granted, you will also receive a house number.
Methodology
- When (re)building:
- do a permit check first via requesting an environmental permit,
- get a permit: you will automatically receive a new house number;
- no permit is required: apply for the house number yourself. - You can also request to change or withdraw a house number.
Required with your application
- A situation sketch (drawing) of the home or business premises for which you are requesting a house number.
- A floor plan and layout of the space or building in the old and new situation.
- A copy of the purchase or rental contract (if it applies to your situation).
- Information about when the situation as it is now arose. For example, the date of (re)construction into rooms or apartment (if this applies to your situation).
Review
When you apply for a house number, the municipality checks that
- the living space is independent,
- the living space complies with the building code,
- the property owner requires an environmental permit.
If the Requirements are met, the municipality assigns the house number or house number change. The municipality communicates this house number to all official organizations, such as Tax Office. Communicate your new house number yourself to other agencies that need to know your address.
Meaning of a house number
A house number is a formal number for a property. The address is recorded in the Basic Registration of Addresses and Buildings. The house number is not permission to live in a property. If you (or someone else) is not legally living in the building, a house number does not change that. Through the Omgevingsloket you can view the environmental plan and find the rules that deal with the use of land and buildings.
