Municipality takes over management and maintenance of Oude Landen cemetery from Foundation
As of January 1, 2026, the municipality will take over the management and maintenance of the Oude Landen cemetery from the Stichting Beheer Gemeentelijke Begraafplaats Oude Landen. The two parties recently decided to do this after an extensive process in which the best way of working was examined. On July 3, 2025, the municipal council officially ratified this decision.
Reason for change in management and maintenance
In 2011, the Nuenen City Council decided to outsource the management and maintenance of the Oude Landen cemetery to the Stichting Beheer Gemeentelijke Begraafplaats Oude Landen. At the end of 2023, two of the three board members of the foundation informed the municipality that they wished to stop performing their duties as board members for personal reasons. The foundation and municipality were unable to find suitable successors. To ensure the continuation of the work, aldermen Löwik and Wouters temporarily took seats on the board of the foundation, but this is not a long-term solution.
For the above reason, in 2024 the municipality examined how the management and maintenance of the Oude Landen cemetery could be given sustainable form and content in the longer term. To this end, three possible scenarios were examined, including operating budgets and an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each scenario:
- Continue the management agreement with the foundation and search for new board members.
- Transfer management and maintenance to an outside party other than the foundation.
- Conduct management and maintenance entirely by the municipality.
After a thorough analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each scenario, it was concluded that transferring management and maintenance to the municipality itself offered the most advantages for the municipality and its residents.
Transfer
The board of the Old Lands Cemetery Management Foundation and the current administrator are going to hand over all their duties and operations to municipal employees. This will happen before the end of the year, after which the foundation will no longer be active in 2026. The current administrator will then enjoy his well-deserved retirement. The municipality is extremely grateful to the administrator of the Stichting Beheer Begraafplaats Oude Landen and the board for their years of effort, enthusiasm and commitment.
Impact on funeral directors and next of kin
Funeral directors will soon be able to make requests for burials/burials through an online system. Once this new online system is implemented, we will communicate this to all funeral directors.
Management and maintenance of the cemetery will continue in the same way. For relatives, therefore, not much will change. Only communication will take place through the municipality instead of the Stichting Beheer Gemeentelijke Begraafplaats Oude Landen starting in 2026.
