Oak processionary caterpillars preparations

Oak processionary caterpillar season is upon us again. You may find hairy caterpillars on oak trees during May, June and July. After contact with the hairs of this caterpillar, symptoms such as itching, skin rashes, irritation to the eyes or respiratory tract may occur.

Biological control method

Preparations for the control of the oak processionary caterpillar are in full swing and are being carried out by a specialized company under the supervision of the municipality. In the coming months, the eggs will be monitored. Once the caterpillars have hatched, preventive control will wait until leaves appear on the trees. This year, too, the municipality has decided to use the biological control method. This involves the pesticide Xentari. Xentari is not harmful to humans or the environment. The natural enemies of the caterpillar, such as ichneumon wasps and flies, bees and mites, are not affected by the pesticide. Besides being environmentally friendly, the pesticide also works preventively.

Implementation

We expect to begin implementation in week 18. A second treatment within approximately 10 days may be necessary. Due to the contractor's workload, the work may also take place in the evening and/or at night. The municipality does not control caterpillars in forest and natural areas. Trees along unpaved roads, with a few exceptions, are also not sprayed. In this way, the municipality hopes to allow the natural enemy of the processionary caterpillar to develop.

Fewer trees will be treated this year than in previous years. Areas that are not along major bicycle routes and are in the countryside will not be sprayed. By applying a less intensive mowing policy in recent years, roadsides have more room for the development of natural enemies such as ichneumon wasps. These can naturally control the nuisance of caterpillars.
