College opts for solutions on existing road network

To prevent further deterioration of the quality of life in the cores, the College proposes to the City Council to take measures to temper growth in automobile traffic: especially by paying more attention to public transportation, cycling and interchanges.

Scenarios

In recent months a study has been done to improve the (traffic) liveability in and accessibility of Nuenen. This study is one of five regional sub-studies. Three scenarios have been examined:

  • Scenario 1A: utilize existing route: multimodality
  • Scenario 1B: utilize existing route: car capacity
  • Scenario 2: new route: eastern peripheral road

For more information on the scenarios, see www.nuenen.nl/studie-verkeersleefbaarheid-en-bereikbaarheid.

Consulting firm TAUW and a project team from the municipality and province examined the effects of these scenarios, both in terms of traffic, livability, costs and support among residents and other stakeholders.

Better public transportation and bicycle connections

Broadly speaking, the college has a package in mind, based on scenario 1A and part of 1B. In this proposal to the city council, alternatives for modes of transport are paramount in order to temper further growth in car traffic and the concomitant inconvenience in Nuenen. Core elements are express bicycle routes, strengthening potential axes for public transport and (from 1B) opening up the bus lanes on the A270. Supporting these are interchange options and smart measures. This preferred scenario, if it is up to the college, will be further developed. Additional measures will also be included, for example regarding spatial quality (e.g. greening) and noise reduction. The Municipal Executive will therefore not opt for additional lanes or a speed increase on Smits van Oyenlaan. An eastern ring road around Nuenen is off the table if it is up to the Municipal Executive.

The council proposal will be discussed in the council committee on June 22. It will follow consideration by the City Council on July 8.
