Green roofs

A green roof is a roof covered with plants. It is a beautiful and sustainable way to beautify your home. There are different types of green roofs:

• Sedum roof
  Lightweight and low maintenance. Covered with sedum plants (succulents). Ideal for simplicity and convenience.
• Herb Roof
  Colorful and vibrant green roof covered with native herbs and flowers. A paradise for bees, butterflies and other insects! 
• Garden roof/landscape roof
  Want to really stand out? Then choose a garden roof or landscape roof. This is a green roof with a thicker layer of substrate on which even shrubs and trees can grow.

Bearing capacity and roofing

Before installing a green roof, it is important to have the load-bearing capacity of your roof checked. A structural engineer can advise you on this. Health also ensure that your roofing material is suitable for a green roof. Contact a roofer for advice.

Maintenance of a green roof

Just like a regular garden, a green roof needs some attention from time to time. Inspect the roof regularly, remove weeds and leaves, and reseed bare spots. In the first year, it is important to check 3-4 times a year, then 1-2 times a year is sufficient. In prolonged drought, watering may be necessary. If you do not have the time or inclination, you can outsource the maintenance to a landscaper or a specialized company.

Do you have a garden that gets quite hot in the summer, or a piece of pavement that you don't use? Then maybe it's an idea to replace those tiles with some plants!

Did you know that a green garden often requires less maintenance than a paved garden? Especially if native or native plants are planted. These plants are well adapted to our climate and soil. For example:

• Broom Crown
• Yarrow
• Common daisy
• Creeping zen green

Native plants require less water and care, and if you also disconnect.... it becomes a piece of cake! A green garden also helps prevent flooding by collecting rainwater and allowing it to infiltrate into the soil.

Vegetables and herbs from your own garden

Do you enjoy gardening? Then create a vegetable or herb garden. That way you can use vegetables, fruits and herbs from your own garden. There are also apps, which help plan and care for your garden.

Grant

The municipality of Nuenen provides subsidies for replacing tiles with greenery. You will receive €5 subsidy per m², with a maximum of €2,500. The minimum surface area to be greened is 10m².

• Work may not have started yet.
• You own the property or have permission from the owner.
• The minimum area for a green roof is 10m².
• The minimum area for tile replacement is 10m².
• The water storage of a green roof is a minimum of 15 liters per m².
• Greening should not cause a nuisance.
• When greening the garden: the ground has been paved for at least 2 years.

Business owners are also interested in installing a green roof. Although at first glance it may seem like a hefty investment, a green roof provides many long-term benefits for your business. It contributes to the good insulation of your premises, which in the summer can save significantly on the use of air conditioning.

Do you have solar panels? Then they yield up to 6% more when you have a green roof, because the panels will stay cooler on hot days. Plus, your roofing will last longer with a green roof.
