Safe through the summer!

Safe through the summer

Summer has officially begun! For many people, it's a happy time when they have vacations or days out planned. But also the time when many burglars strike. Unfortunately, they don't go on vacation, as it turns out every year.

So during the summer period, we want to make our residents extra vigilant about leaving their homes safe, in hopes of preventing possible residential burglaries.

In fact, the homes of vacationers are a very easy target and often clearly show that no one is home for an extended period of time. With bulging mailboxes, curtains that are constantly closed and never a light on, it is often easy for burglars to pick out homes whose occupants are away for extended periods of time.

Tips

If you want to prevent the chance of a burglary in your home or neighborhood, follow these tips.

Notify neighbors

Your trusted neighbors can help you keep an eye on the house and make it look lived in. This by taking away the mail, watering the plants, putting the car in the driveway, closing and opening the curtains from time to time.
In addition, tell your neighbors to call the police immediately via 112, the emergency number, in case of a suspicious situation (e.g., glass shattering/shattering in your home while you are away).

Door locked

Windows and doors are open more often with the nice weather. An intruder can then easily, without breaking in, enter your home and make off with your belongings within minutes. Do not leave valuables in plain sight and close the doors and windows you cannot see. Even if you are only going to visit the neighbors for a short time, run errands or go upstairs to hang laundry, for example.

Do not mention on Social Media that you are away.

Besides an unoccupied house, there are often other things that burglars can easily tell that you are away from home, such as posting an absence message on Social Media. Therefore, be well aware of this when posting on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or other Social Media channels.

Remove climbing objects

Do not leave "climbing objects," such as ladders, wheelie bins and other large objects outside. These are easy tools for burglars to enter your home.

Call 911 in case of suspicious situations

If you stay at home, be alert too! Do you see anything unusual? A strange car, a person on the lookout or any other situation you don't trust? Write down details such as appearance, clothing, license plate, make and color and call the police immediately.
In case of emergency or red flag, call 112 and otherwise 0900-8844.

Establish a Neighborhood WhatsApp group.

Don't have a Neighborhood WhatsApp group in the neighborhood yet? Then start one, or participate in such a group. Together with your neighbors you can keep an eye on a large part of the neighborhood and easily warn each other about suspicious situations. In short, many extra ears and eyes for the police.

Boarding Pass with handy checklist

To reach as many vacationers as possible, the municipality has developed a "Boarding Pass" with a handy checklist to go through before you go on vacation. This "Boarding Pass" is available at the Town Hall reception desk.
