Renovation The Hunger Man

De Hongerman in Nuenen-Zuid houses a sports hall and socio-cultural accommodation. The sports section was built in the mid-1970s and the socio-cultural section dates from the mid-1980s. The entire building is outdated.

The municipality will therefore renovate the sports hall sustainably and renew the locker rooms, showers and other areas. The renovation will take place in two phases. The first phase consists of the construction of a new multifunctional part and the sports support facilities. In phase two, the existing multipurpose area and sports support facilities will then be demolished. The multifunctional area will then be expanded and the sports hall renovated and made more sustainable. This approach will allow the building to remain in use during the work.

We expect to once again have a future-proof and sustainable facility for exercise education, indoor sports and socio-cultural functions in the Hongerman after the summer of 2026.

Latest news:

Dec. 10, 2024 - Contractor The Hunger Man announced.

Gemeente Nuenen and BanBouw B.V. signed the contracting agreement for the renovation and expansion of sports hall and MFA De Hongerman on December 10. This is another important step in the future realization of this project.

The renovation and expansion of the Hongerman will give Nuenen a preserved and future-proof indoor sports facility with an additional gymnasium at Hoge Brake 3. The cultural-societal facility at that location will also be renovated. With this, the municipality will provide sufficient legally required indoor locations for exercise education by elementary school and modern spaces for the social organizations located in Nuenen-Zuid. The sports hall will be renovated and made more sustainable, allowing indoor sports clubs to use it for a long time to come.

In the coming months, all parties involved will work together to detail the technical and organizational design. Preparatory work will start in the spring of 2025. Then the area around the Hongerman will be set up as a construction site. Measures will also be taken to protect flora and fauna. After that, demolition and construction work will begin. First, the new multifunctional area and a gymnasium will be built on the south side of the current building. The old multipurpose rooms will then be demolished. Then the sports hall itself will be renovated. The building will remain in use during the work.
