Response Memorandum on the Delta Rhine Corridor East Published
From March 27 through May 7, the public was invited to comment on the initial plans for the Delta Rhine Corridor East (DRC East). A total of 27 comments were received. Each comment has been addressed in the response document, which has now been published.
The DRC East at a Glance
DRC East involves the construction of an underground CO2 pipeline between Boxtel and Venlo. You can visit www.energietransitie.nl/delta-rhine-corridor-oost to see the approximate route of the pipeline.
What were the comments about?
The construction of a pipeline can have an impact on people, businesses, agriculture, and the natural environment. Many of the comments therefore focused on the route, safety, nature, and the landscape, as well as on how local residents and other stakeholders are being involved in the decision-making process.
You can find all comments and responses in the response document on the website mentioned above.
Follow-up steps
The feedback received will be used in the next phase of the project: drafting the draft Scope and Level of Detail Memorandum (draft SLDM). This study plan specifies which environmental impacts will be assessed and how that assessment will be conducted. The results will be documented in an environmental impact report (EIR), which will be used in further decision-making regarding the project.
A participation plan had also been published. The feedback received is being used to improve the participation plan.
The draft NRD and the revised participation plan are expected in the second quarter of 2027.
The DRC East is part of the overhaul of our energy system
The Netherlands is transitioning to a more sustainable energy system, with lower CO₂ emissions and less dependence on fossil fuels. The DRC Oost is contributing to this effort with an underground CO₂ pipeline between Boxtel and Venlo. This pipeline makes it possible to transport captured CO₂ so that it does not end up in the atmosphere.
Before the pipeline can be laid, we will assess, among other things, the impact on the surrounding area and safety. Local residents and other stakeholders will also have the opportunity to provide feedback on the plans. The feedback received will be taken into account as the project is further developed, leading up to a decision on the exact route.
