Council adopts church vision for Nuenen

Following the adoption of the Heritage Policy Document in 2023, the municipality of Nuenen has been working on a so-called "Churches Vision." This vision outlines a picture or perspective for the future of religious heritage in our municipality.

Due to various (national) trends, such as secularization, there are increasing discussions in society about what might happen to religious buildings in the future. The national government has therefore asked municipalities to draw up so-called church visions. A church vision enables owners, governments and stakeholders to anticipate the coming changes regarding function, use and ownership of church buildings.

There is no vacancy of religious heritage in Nuenen. Nevertheless, the municipality did create the vision to have a basis for potential future issues on this topic. The municipal council adopted the Churches Vision for Nuenen on September 19, 2024. The churches vision was created after consultation with church owners in Nuenen, among others, and with funding from the State.

The municipality has chosen to write primarily a directional vision in outline. The vision does not make any specific statements about the future function of the church buildings in Nuenen. However, with this vision the congregation does want to ensure that, should there ever be a possible reallocation in the future, we will anticipate a function with a social character.
