Acknowledgment of (unborn) child
What is it?
Are you not married or in a registered partnership with the mother of your child or unborn child? Then you can still assume paternity/motherhood. We call this recognition.
Make an appointment
Recognition can only be done after making an appointment by phone : (040) 2631 631. The recognition will then take place in person at City Hall.
Acknowledge before birth
An acknowledgment during pregnancy is called an acknowledgment unborn child. This has the advantage that legal paternity/maternity is already established at birth. You can also record the child's last name.
Acknowledge at or after birth
Acknowledgment can also be made at or after the birth declaration, unless a father is already listed on the child's birth certificate. For children up to age 16, the mother must give written consent. Children 12 and older must also give their own written consent to recognition.
To bring with you during the appointment
- valid ID of the acknowledger;
- valid ID of the mother.
Parental authority
Unmarried and unregistered partners automatically receive joint parental authority when their child is recognized . In this, the law has changed; until Jan. 1, 2023, both parents still had to arrange this themselves in court.
If you do not want this, please indicate it during your appointment and discuss it with the registrar.
Co-motherhood
If you have questions about co-motherhood, please contact the service department at (040) 2631 631.
What does it cost?
There is no cost associated with acknowledging a child.
