Foster Care Week 2025

From October 29 through November 5, it is the Week of Foster Care. In this week, Foster Care Netherlands, Combinatie Jeugdzorg and other regional foster care organizations draw attention to the importance of foster care and the shortage of foster parents. The municipality of Nuenen also supports this initiative, because every child deserves to grow up as at home as possible - in their own family if possible, and otherwise in a foster family.

What is foster care?

Foster care means that a child stays with another family for a short or longer period of time, because living with their own parents is (temporarily) not possible due to circumstances. Sometimes children stay with foster parents for a weekend or a few days a week. Often children live with a foster family seven days a week. Which form is chosen depends on what is best for the child. If there are problems in a family, the first step is always to see if they can be solved at home. If that does not work, then foster care is often the first choice, because this form of care comes closest to the natural family situation. Preferably, placement takes place with family or acquaintances in the child's immediate environment. If this is not possible, Combinatie Jeugdzorg looks for a suitable foster family within its foster parent database. The right of children to grow up in a family is paramount in foster care.

New foster families desperately needed

The number of available foster parents is decreasing, while many children are still waiting for a place in a foster home. New foster families are therefore desperately needed - families who can offer a child a temporary second home.
