What is it?
You can have a deceased person buried or cremated. To do this, you need permission from the municipality. Your funeral director usually arranges this for you.
Permit Excavation, reburial and cremation
You can have a remains exhumed if you want to bury the deceased in another grave. You can also still cremate the remains.
You need a permit to exhume a remains. This can be done either within 2 months of the burial or at least 10 years after. The mayor reviews the application.
To obtain an exhumation permit, you or your funeral director can use the online form.
Burial or cremation by the municipality
Article 21 of the Burial Act states that the municipality has the duty to arrange the funeral if someone dies within the municipal boundaries whose next of kin are unknown or whose next of kin are unable to pay for the funeral. The municipality then becomes the principal of the funeral. The municipality also determines how the funeral will be conducted. The cost of the funeral, if possible, is paid from the deceased's estate. If this is not sufficient, the next of kin in the first degree are called upon to pay the (remaining) amount.

- asking permission for burial or cremation
- declaration of death
- Provide a casket for the funeral
- buying a grave in a cemetery
- Provide an urn for cremation
- Requesting a postponement for burial or cremation
Cemeteries
Public municipal cemetery Old Lands
The public municipal cemetery Oude Landen is located at Beekstraat 48A, in Nuenen.
Oude Landen Cemetery is a public cemetery, which means: a cemetery for all denominations. A separate section of the cemetery is reserved for parishioners. In addition, a separate section has been set up for Muslim burials.
The cemetery is owned by the municipality of Nuenen. Management of the cemetery rests with the Stichting Beheer Algemene Begraafplaats Oude Landen.
Both general and private graves are issued in the cemetery. Private graves are issued for a period of 20 years. After this period, the person entitled to the grave may request an extension of this period. The extension is made each time for no longer than 10 years. There is also the possibility of an indefinite grave. A maximum of two deceased persons may be buried in a private grave. More than one deceased person may be buried in a general grave.

Placement of memorial
Permission to place a memorial must be requested from the board of the foundation 'Beheer Algemene Begraafplaats Oude Landen'. Permission is applied for and in the name of the person entitled to the grave space.
The board has established rules about the nature and dimensions of the memorial and the manner of its installation. In addition to private and general graves, there is the possibility of interring urns in an urn column or urn cellar. There is also the possibility of scattering the ashes of a deceased person in a separate scattering field.

Old Lands Cemetery is open to visitors between sunrise and sunset via a small walkway gate.

The Protestant Cemetery
The Roosdoncken can be found on the Broekdijk next to number 7, 5674MN Nuenen.
Inquiries: Helma de Waardt (040-2841423/06-43503842). The cemetery is always accessible through the parking lot.
Municipal cemeteries Tomakker and the Huikert.
Located on the Tomakker in Nuenen is the old municipal public cemetery (where, among others, Theo van Gogh, the father of) is buried. No new burials take place at this cemetery anymore.
Next to the R.C. cemetery on the Huikert in Gerwen is a small cemetery for the Sinti residents of Nuenen. This cemetery is owned by the municipality. Management of this cemetery rests with the Sinti community.
