WORK PAYS OFF: A Different Perspective on Work and Human Value

What happens when someone is at home without a job and wants to participate in society, but gets stuck in the very systems that are meant to support people? And how stark is the contrast with the world of working people?  Employment development agency WSD, the municipalities of Best, Son en Breugel, Boxtel, Oirschot, Sint-Michielsgestel, Vught, Meierijstad, Nuenen, and Oisterwijk, and design studio Yellowchess are placing these questions at the heart of WERKEN LOONT, an immersive installation that will be on view during Dutch Design Week 2026 in Eindhoven.

WORK PAYS OFF

"WORK PAYS OFF" is an immersive installation exploring how we, as a society, have structured work, participation, and human value. Visitors literally move between two worlds. In the first world, the system takes center stage, and visitors experience how people can become trapped by rules, procedures, rejections, and expectations. In contrast, there is a world in which work brings energy, rhythm, growth, and meaning.

By juxtaposing these two realities, *WERKEN LOONT* holds up a mirror to visitors—not only to the people who get stuck, but also to the systems we have designed and the choices we have come to regard as normal within them.

Who's actually the one with limitations here?

"WORK PAYS OFF" confronts visitors with a question that concerns us all:

Who, exactly, is limited here? People, the system, or the way we’ve structured work and value? The installation doesn’t provide answers, but invites a conversation about the future of work, participation, and human value.

Exploring New Perspectives Together

"WORK PAYS" was developed by the employment development agency WSD, the municipalities of Best, Son en Breugel, Boxtel, Oirschot, Sint-Michielsgestel, Vught, Meierijstad, Nuenen, and Oisterwijk, and the design studio Yellowchess. Together, they are exploring how the design approach can contribute to new perspectives on work, participation, and human value in a rapidly changing society.

"WORK PAYS" will be open to the public free of charge from October 17 through 25, 2026, at Ketelhuisplein during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven.
