Village and neighborhood council elections

On March 18, 2026, in addition to the municipal elections, elections will be held for the village councils of Gerwen and Nederwetten, as well as for the Eeneind district council.

The village council elections in Gerwen and Nederwetten are organized by the incumbent village council members. The Eeneind district council is currently not 'staffed', so the municipality is taking care of the organization of those elections.

What does a village or neighborhood council do?

The village or neighborhood council represents the collective interests of the residents of its area. It does so by providing the mayor and aldermen with solicited and unsolicited advice on all kinds of matters that occur (only) in Gerwen, Nederwetten, or Eeneind, respectively. Issues such as new housing plans, the design of public spaces, traffic measures, street naming, etc.

The rules governing this are laid down in theRegulations for Village and Neighborhood Councilsin the Municipality of Nuenen. If you are considering standing as a candidate, some parts of the regulations are particularly interesting:

  • You must live in the area covered by the village or neighborhood council. Normally, you would know this, but if you are unsure, the regulations describe the areas in detail.
  • You must be able to submit a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) if you are appointed. To ensure that this is possible, it is best to apply for the VOG before you apply for the position.
The costs of a VOG are reimbursed by the municipality.
  • Candidates are listed in random order on the ballot. The people (minimum 5 and maximum 7) with the most votes are appointed as members of the village or neighborhood council. That is, provided that at least 35% of eligible voters have cast their ballots.
  • A village or neighborhood council is an advisory body to the mayor and aldermen.
