Japanese knotweed in Nuenen

Japanese Knotweed (JKD) is becoming increasingly common in Nuenen. This plant spreads easily. A small piece of leaf, stem or root is enough to grow again. The municipality has mapped where the plant grows Map

Rapid growth displaces other plants

Japanese Knotweed is not toxic, but it is a problem for biodiversity. The plant grows rapidly and displaces other plants. It also grows rapidly underground. Its roots can spread over long distances. The plant does not produce seeds, so the flowers do not provide additional spread.

No obligation, but action

The law does not require people to control Japanese Knotweed. Nevertheless, the municipality of Nuenen is actively tackling this problem. In this way, we want to prevent further spread and nuisance.

Approach with help from experts

The municipality cooperates with a specialized company. For each spot we look at what the best approach is. At the moment we let the plant grow in many places. In the fall we mow it once. Research shows that this is a good method.

Is the plant growing close to houses? Then we actively control it. In places without houses nearby, we don't do anything extra for the time being.
