Redesign of Public Spaces in the Kernkwartier and Surrounding Area

The Kernkwartier Shopping Center is the heart of Nuenen-Zuid, where living, working, shopping, and socializing come together. This project focuses on a comprehensive redesign of the public space, the layout of the parking lot, and the surrounding residential streets, such as Vinkenlaan, Wielewaallaan, Meeuwenlaan, Mantelmeeuwlaan, and Zilvermeeuwhof. 

Key Tasks & Goals

  • Climate & Quality of Life: Addressing flooding and heat stress through measures such as increased greening and an improved quality of life. 
  • Logistics & Parking: Addressing traffic conditions in the parking lot, establishing clear routing, and ensuring the safe flow of (freight) traffic for loading and unloading. 
  • Traffic Safety: Addressing speeding and unsafe crossings in the areas around Hoge Brake, Refeling, Wederikdreef, and Lyndakkers, among others. 
  • Accessibility: Improving accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

Schedule and Milestones for Kernkwartier & Surrounding Area

  1. Remaining tasks: Begin implementation—second quarter of 2028

    We expect to be able to begin implementation in the second quarter of 2028.

  2. Still to be done: Final DesignPresentation - Fall 2027

    In the fall of 2027, we will hold a briefing session to present the Final Design.

  3. Remaining tasks: Develop Preliminary Design & Final Design - 2027

    In 2027, we will be working toward a Preliminary Design (VO) and Final Design (DO).

  4. Next steps: Develop preliminary design—fall 2026

    In the fall of 2026, we will develop the Preliminary Design (SO).

  5. Upcoming: Working sessions with focus groups - Fall 2026

    In the fall of 2026, we will organize in-depth working sessions with the focus groups.

  6. Completed: Incorporation of Input into the Customer Requirements Specification (CRS) - August 2026

    In August 2026, we incorporated the input into the Customer Requirements Specification (CRS).

  7. Completed: Street Interviews at the Shopping Center - July 2026

    On July 23, 2026, CoCosmos held street interviews near the shopping center.

  8. Completed: Neighborhood Walk through Kernkwartier & Surrounding Area - July 2026

    On July 1, 2026, the neighborhood walk took place in the Kernkwartier and surrounding area.

  9. Completed: Presentation on Kernkwartier & Surrounding Area at the neighborhood meeting—June 25, 2026

    On June 25, 2026, a meeting was held during which we presented the plans for the Kernkwartier and surrounding area.
