Commemoration ceremony for Ukraine at municipal reception center

On Sunday, February 22, Mayor Freek van Genugten and the Ukrainian residents of the municipal reception center at Vrouwkesakker paused to reflect on the fact that the war in Ukraine began four years ago (February 24, 2022). In a private and subdued setting, there was room for remembrance, sadness, and solidarity.

A special part of the commemoration was the performance by the children. In an impressive performance/play, they showed the impact the war had on them and their lives. With their story, they made it tangible what it means to have to leave your home and live in uncertainty.

After the performance, the group walked to the memorial tree, which was planted last year at the reception center. A minute's silence was held at the tree for the victims and for everyone affected by the war. The moment underscored the power of commemorating together and offering each other support.

To conclude, Mayor Freek van Genugten handed out sunflower seeds. The card accompanying them bore the message: “Sunflower seeds: a sign of hope, resilience, and solidarity. Plant them, care for them, and let them grow toward the light.”
