Nuenen municipality and BAM Infra sign construction team agreement for first three 'Livable and accessible Nuenen' projects

The municipality of Nuenen and BAM Infra Nederland today signed the construction team agreement for the first three projects within the framework of 'Livable and accessible Nuenen' (Cluster Zuid). By joining forces, we are working on an optimal design with a focus on livability and sustainability. The design is expected to be completed in February 2026.

The construction team agreement includes three projects:

  1. Opening bus lanes Geldropsedijk - A270 to motorized traffic
  2. Construction of noise barrier on north side of A270 motorway
  3. Redesign of Smits van Oyenlaan (southern section).

Alderman Sandor Löwik signed the agreement on behalf of the municipality of Nuenen. He emphasized the importance of keeping Nuenen livable and accessible. Rob Leenders, business manager at BAM Infra Nederland, is delighted that the construction team is getting underway and that BAM can use its expertise for an optimal outcome. Both are looking forward to a productive collaboration. The meeting was festively concluded with cake.

Alderman Sandor Löwik and BAM business manager Rob Leenders celebrate the signing of the construction team agreement.

Sandor Löwik, Alderman Municipality of Nuenen:
"With these first 3 cohesive projects, we are going to work to keep our beautiful municipality livable and accessible. We are working towards a more pleasant living environment for our residents and better mobility. Naturally, we are doing this together with local residents and other stakeholders."

Rob Leenders, business manager at BAM Infra Netherlands:
"This construction team is a great example of how we like to work together. By combining our knowledge of technology, sustainability and participation with the municipality's goals, we come up with a design that really adds value. For the environment and for the future."

Construction Team

BAM won the tender for the first three works. Together with the municipality, they form a construction team, a cooperation model in which client and contractor work intensively together on - in this case three - projects as early as the design phase. By working together as early as the design phase, we make optimum use of each other's knowledge and experience.

To further elaborate the package of measures (Preferred Alternative) traffic livability and accessibility adopted by the City Council in late 2021 - BAM is deploying various areas of expertise. Technical designers, project managers, environmental managers and risk managers are working on the design. BAM also connected a landscape architect to the construction team. This enables the construction team to design with both sustainability and participation in mind.

In this way, we are working on a concrete plan for the City Council that is ready for implementation, meets the wishes of the surrounding area and fits within the financial frameworks of the municipality.

Three subprojects in cluster South

Preparation for implementation of the first three projects is starting now. Implementation itself is expected to follow in 2027. These are three projects that come together and belong together in cluster South:

  1. Opening of bus lanes Geldropsedijk - A270 to motorized traffic
  2. Narrowing Smits van Oyenlaan (south)
  3. Construction of noise barrier on north side of A270 motorway

We will open the existing bus lanes via the Geldropsedijk - A270 slip road to motorized traffic. This improves Nuenen's accessibility and allows us to better distribute and control traffic in Nuenen. The new design will also help improve the safety and flow of public transport.

The consequence of the package of measures (in particular the opening of the A270 bus lanes) is that there will be less traffic on Smits van Oyenlaan (between Klamperlaan traffic circle and the A270 junction). By narrowing part of the road here to a single lane, the road is better suited to the permitted speed of 50 km/h.

We are placing a noise barrier along the A270 (section between Smits van Oyenlaan and Geldropsedijk on the north side of the A270). We are doing this because it provides a great local improvement in the quality of life (noise). There are various possibilities for the soundproofing facility that the construction team is investigating.

Planning

In May 2025, the construction team was formed. This team will now first start working on the participation process: involving the environment in the design for the three projects. We hope to complete this in 2025 so that there will be a final design in 2026. Implementation of the projects is expected to start in 2026 and be completed in 2027.

Follow-up projects

These three projects will be followed by the Gemert - Eindhoven express bicycle route. The intersections on Smits van Oyenlaan will also be modified at a number of points, and a "village hub" will be established in Gerwen: a junction where different types of transportation come together.
