Honorary citizenship for Van Gogh expert Ton de Brouwer
During a meeting on March 22, 2023 at 4 p.m. in the council chamber at Het Klooster, Park 1 in Nuenen, Mr. A.H.A.M. (Ton) de Brouwer received by promotion the highest municipal decoration, honorary citizenship of the municipality of Nuenen, Gerwen and Nederwetten. The council decided to award this honorary citizenship in a closed meeting on February 2, 2023. Mayor Maarten Houben performed the presentation.
Ton de Brouwer has dedicated himself as a Van Gogh expert, writer and curator over the past fifty years, optimizing the relationship Nuenen and Van Gogh. His first book, "Van Gogh and Nuenen," was published in 1984. And many more followed. He was the initiator of setting up the Van Gogh Documentation Center in the 1970s. This has since grown into today's Van Gogh Village Museum, which attracts visitors from all over the world.
Previously, Mr. De Brouwer had already received the municipal golden medal of honor in 1991; he was awarded royal honors in 1999 with appointment as Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau. At the opening of the Vincentre in 2010, he received the provincial decoration Hertog Jan.
Ton de Brouwer has accumulated exceptional merits for Nuenen society and far beyond. The award of honorary citizenship by the city council is a token of appreciation and gratitude for his enormous efforts.
