Participate in Car-Free School Week
Car-Free School Week will take place from September 14 through 18. Car-Free School Week is an initiative launched by the municipalities of Brabant and the “Brabant Goes for ZERO Traffic Fatalities” campaign to encourage parents and guardians to take their child(ren) to school by means other than by car. This not only contributes to traffic safety around schools but also to the child’s well-being.
In recent years, car traffic around schools has continued to increase. This makes traffic around schools heavier and, as a result, less safe. And that’s a shame, say the campaign’s organizers. After all, children usually enjoy walking or biking much more. Fewer short car trips mean a safer school environment. The long-term goal of the campaign is to inspire parents to walk or bike their children to school more often from now on.
Walking or biking to school instead of driving not only promotes safety but also enhances a child’s well-being (CROW-KpVV, undated). Children who walk and bike more often learn sooner how to navigate traffic independently. Because they can get to school on their own, the “morning rush hour” becomes less hectic for parents. Moreover, it’s good for children’s social skills. It helps them interact more with neighbors and learn to resolve minor conflicts earlier on. It’s also better for their health. By walking, biking, or riding a scooter, children stay active, which reduces the risk of asthma or obesity.
Car-Free School Week is part of the campaign “Brabant is committed to ZERO traffic fatalities. Your actions matter.” This campaign aims to raise awareness among road users about their role in traffic.
