The Hongerman name will be retained

Nuenen residents voted by a large majority (94%) to keep the name Hongerman. This name will apply to the entire building in Nuenen-Zuid after completion of the renovation of the Hongerman, i.e. both the sports hall and the multifunctional accommodation.

26 alternative names suggested

In July 2024, the council passed a motion to arrive at an appropriate and appealing new name for the Hongerman through citizen participation. In March of this year, Nuenen residents could make a suggestion for a new name. That yielded 26 names. A jury of experts, including the former Village Master as representative of Nuenen, the chairmen of the village councils of Gerwen and Nederwetten and the chairman of the heritage association De Drijehornick, chose the name De Repelen. This name was submitted by Mrs. Leijen.

Nuenen people choose Hongerman 

Next, all residents of Nuenen were allowed to cast their votes on the names De Repelen and Hongerman. 695 residents took advantage of this. 633 submitters (94%) chose Hongerman and 62 (6%) voted for De Repelen. Thus, the building will keep its familiar name Hongerman even after the renovation.

We sincerely thank Ms. Leijen for the effort taken, her creativity and the good foundation of the proposed name. Thanks to her contribution there was something to choose from and residents were able to have their say on the name of this important social building in Nuenen-South.
