ON! in the dark
The days are getting shorter and traffic takes place more often in the dark. Especially then, good bicycle lighting is indispensable. Cyclists are vulnerable road users, especially at dusk and in bad weather. Yet many people still ride without proper working lights. Therefore, the national campaign AAN in het donker of komveiligthuis.nl.
Why lighting is so important
Many cyclists know how important lighting is, yet it often goes wrong. Batteries are dead, bulbs are broken or the lights are simply forgotten. This poses great risks:
- With lights, you are visible at 150 meters; without lights, only at 25 meters.
- Reflective strips even increase your visibility up to 500 meters.
- The taillight is crucial because you can't see behind oncoming traffic yourself.
Tips for visibility
- Turn on your bike light as soon as the street lights come on.
- Check regularly that front and rear lights are working.
- Charge rechargeable lights or replace batteries on time.
- Wear light or reflective clothing.
- Attach reflectors to your bike, bag or helmet.
