The information on this page applies only to voters with Dutch nationality.
If you do not have Dutch nationality, you can find more information on the information page for EU citizens

Authorize someone to cast your vote

Can't come to the polling place yourself? Then you can authorize someone to do this for you. This can be done via the back of your voting pass ('private authorization').

The ability to grant a proxy online (written authorization) is closed as of Monday, June 3.

Requirements

  • A person may be authorized by up to 2 persons.
The authorized person may cast a total of 3 votes: 1 for himself and 2 for other persons.
  • The proxy shall cast all vote(s) at the same time as his own vote.

Private authorization

You can authorize someone to cast your vote using your voting card. This is called a private authorization.

  1. Check if someone may vote for you
    - The person you authorize must live in the same municipality as you.
    - The person you authorize may be authorized by a maximum of 2 people (i.e. it is not possible to vote for 3 others).

  2. Voting card completion
You and the authorized representative fill out and sign the back of your voting card.

  3. Bring voting card and copy of identification
Give the proxy your voting card and a copy of your valid identification (this may be either a paper copy or a photo on your phone or tablet).

  4. Voting on your behalf
On election day, the proxy will cast a vote on your behalf.

Tips for making a secure copy of your ID

  • write on the copy that it is a copy,
  • write on the copy that it is intended for your authorization,
  • write the date on the copy,
  • cross out your citizen service number on the copy; do the same with the numbers at the bottom of your ID.
