Getting married in/from abroad

Do you live abroad and want to get married in Nuenen? 

If you both do not live in the Netherlands, you can only marry in our country if you or your partner have Dutch nationality. In that case, your notification of intended marriage will go through the municipality of The Hague. This also applies to a registered partnership. 

  1. Report your proposed marriage/partnership to in The Hague.
    Please indicate that the ceremony will take place in the municipality of Nuenen.
  2. Through The Hague, we learn of your proposed marriage.
  3. We will contact you to discuss the necessary documents.
  • It may take a long time to legalize your documents. Please allow for a longer preparation period.
  • Keep your original source documents safe. The municipality needs them physically in order to review your application.

Do you live in Nuenen but were married abroad or entered into a registered partnership there? 

After your ceremony abroad, please contact us by phone or email.
Once your marriage certificate has been properly legalized, you can register your marriage in the Netherlands. 

Are you getting married or entering into a civil partnership abroad?

Are you getting married or entering into a registered partnership abroad? If so, check with the local authorities in the country where you will be getting married or entering into a partnership to find out what documents are required. In some cases, this involves a certificate of no impediment to marriage (also known as a “certificate of marital status”), while other countries require a certificate of legal capacity to marry. 

The Rijksoverheid’s website, , provides information on other matters you need to consider, such as obtaining permission to marry as a foreign national in that country.

Option 1: Certificate of No Prior Marriage (residents of Nuenen)

A certificate of single status proves that you are not married and do not have a registered partnership. This can be done with an extract that states your marital status.

Option 2: Certificate of No Impediment (for those who do not live in the Netherlands)

Apply for a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (for non-residents of the Netherlands)

If you no longer live in the Netherlands, this extract will show that you were unmarried when you left the country. You do not request this extract from your last municipality of residence, but through an RNI office at . 

Option 3: Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (residents of Nuenen or the last municipality of residence in the Netherlands)

Request a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage

*Please note: Only request this if you really need it. Once you have submitted your request and made the payment, you will not be able to get a refund.  

In some cases, the country where you plan to get married may require a certificate of no impediment to marriage. This certificate confirms that you and your partner are legally permitted to marry or enter into a registered partnership under Dutch law. Therefore, all documents required for a marriage or registered partnership in the Netherlands are also required for this purpose. Do you meet the Requirements get married in the Netherlands? If so, you will receive a certificate of no impediment to marriage.

You can apply for a certificate of no impediment to marriage in Nuenen if:

  • you are currently a resident of Nuenen
    or
  • if Nuenen was your last place of residence in the Netherlands before you moved abroad.

Have you never been registered in the Netherlands? If so, request the certificate from the Dutch embassy or consulate in the country where you plan to get married.

Required with your application 

We need several documents for your application. Please have them ready.

  1. Birth certificate (if you were born abroad)
    Both partners must submit a recent international birth certificate. You can request this from your country of birth.
    Please note: this only applies if this birth certificate has not previously been registered in the BRP Basic Registration of Persons).

  2. International Certificate of Residence (if you live abroad)
    Do you live abroad? If so, you will need a recently issued international certificate of residence for both partners.
    Health this certificate includes:
    - your marital status
    - your nationality
    - your place of residence.

  3. Valid ID
    A copy of a valid ID for both partners.
    Tip: Use theKopieID app from the Rijksoverheid make a secure copy.

  4. If previously married/divorced:
    - a birth certificate or marriage certificate with a note of divorce, or
    - a divorce decree, or
    - a certificate of dissolution of a registered partnership.
    Please note: this is only required if your divorce or dissolution took place after you left the Netherlands and is therefore not recorded in the Personal Records Database (Basisregistratie Personen).

Key considerations

  • Please submit scanned copies of all documents using the online form. We will then verify that you have submitted the correct documents. 

    We will then ask you to send us the original documents at a later date so that we can verify their authenticity. This does not apply to your identification documents; the scan you submitted is sufficient for these. 
     

  • Check whether your documents require an apostille or legalization.
    You can check this by country via Nederland Wereldwijd. 
     
  • Are your documents not written in Dutch, English, French, or German? In that case, you will also need a translation by a certified translator.
