Reception of refugees in school building Vrouwkesakker
The college has given the green light for the conversion of the vacant school building on the Vrouwkesakker to accommodate Ukrainian refugees. The intention is to make the site suitable for semi-permanent housing for a period of 3 to 6 months (initial estimate). The classrooms will be converted into living space, there will be a common kitchen and sanitary facilities. When everything is ready, about 70 refugees can be accommodated.
For this, a lot still needs to be arranged: the renovation of the building, its furnishing, but also how we can help the refugees quickly in the social field (registration in the basic registration of persons, living expenses, activities, education, etc.). For this we are of course working together with the Safety Region and housing corporation Helpt Elkander, but also with the municipality of Son en Breugel, which is going to realize a similar shelter.
We want to provide refugees with a warm and safe shelter as soon as possible, and we believe we will be ready to do so by the first week of June. Although it is a tough task, we are proud to be able to do this as a municipality.
