Camping waiver application

What is it?

Camping exemption (outside licensed camping establishment)

Recreational camping is allowed in the Netherlands only at campsites or sites designated for that purpose. Outside these areas, (recreational) camping is therefore prohibited. The ban does not apply to placing camping equipment for your own use on your own property.

For special situations, however, you can apply to the municipality for a temporary exemption from this prohibition. This may involve various forms of camping, such as camping at a farm, camping during an event or group camping in the wild.

Among other things, the municipality imposes fire safety requirements for the establishment of a temporary campground.

A waiver may be denied in the interest of:

  • the protection of nature and landscape; or
  • the protection of a cityscape.

You will be notified within 8 weeks whether you will receive a permit to camp outside a campground.
