Housing permit holders

Permit holders are asylum seekers who have received a residence permit. Municipalities must ensure that these people get housing as soon as possible. Every six months the municipality of Nuenen receives a so-called task assignment from the State for the number of permit holders to be housed. This number depends on the number of inhabitants of a municipality. Based on the task assignment, the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) matches permit holders to a municipality for housing. On the website of the Rijksoverheid (at the bottom of the page under Documents) you can find the current task objectives per municipality.

How does the municipality provide housing for permit holders?

The municipality makes annual performance agreements with the housing corporations Helpt Elkander, Woonbedrijf and Wooninc. The housing corporations provide housing by making available vacant rental housing. Another way is by adding rental housing by means of new construction, temporary housing, transformation of office buildings into housing or residential division (converting large family homes into several smaller homes).

In addition to housing through the housing corporations, the municipality also (incidentally) provides housing for permit holders. We do this by using temporary housing owned by the municipality. These are homes purchased as part of area development and available for housing for a few years at most.

State of affairs in Nuenen

In 2017, we faced a large backlog in the housing of permit holders in Nuenen. The task at the time consisted of a backlog (37) plus task assignment (32) and thus a total of (69) permit holders to be housed. Through a joint effort by the municipality and housing corporations, the backlog from 2017 has been cleared. Most people received housing from the housing corporation. Temporary housing from the municipality has also been used to provide sufficient housing. The current status of meeting the task order is on the Province of North Brabant website (at the bottom of the page under Documents and files).

Housing in preparation

Temporary housing White Dog Trail

We have reached an agreement with Wooninc. about the realization of 16 temporary houses at the Witte-Hondpad in Nuenen for a period of 10 years. In this way, Wooninc. and the municipality do not want the pressure on the social housing market to increase any further. The homes are intended for single-person households who are urgently looking for affordable rental housing. A maximum of half of the homes will be used to house permit holders. The rest will be allocated to people with social and economic ties to Nuenen.

An environmental permit was granted for this project in October 2018. The homes have not yet been realized due to an ongoing legal procedure.

Residential split

We have made agreements with Woonbedrijf to split two large single-family homes into six small housing units in 2020. One or two of these homes may be used to house permit holders.
