DigiDchanging names online

Those who are married or in a registered partnership can choose to use their partner's last name. This is called name use. You will then be addressed by the surname you choose in letters from the municipality and other government agencies.

Keep surname

In addition to your chosen name, you will always remain registered with your own (birth) name in the basic registration of persons. So your own name never changes, but you can choose which surname you would like to use in everyday life. You can reverse this name at any time.

Government agencies

You can tell us your choice of surname use. The municipality will then let government organizations such as the tax authorities, pension funds and the water board know so that they can use the surname of your choice. All other institutions and companies (banks, insurance companies, subscriptions) you will have to inform yourself.

Official documents

On official documents, such as your passport or driver's license, your own last name remains. This is because in the Basic Registration of PersonsBRP) you always keep your own name. You can, however, ask the municipality to include your partner's last name when you apply for these documents. This will then appear next to your own name.

Various options

You can choose when changing name usage:

- only your own last name;

- Only your partner's last name;

- Your partner's last name, followed by your own last name;

- Your own last name followed by your partner's name.

Divorce or death

Are you divorced, have you ended a registered partnership or has your partner died? Then you may continue to use your (ex-)partner's last name until you marry again or enter into a registered partnership. If you do not want this, please inform us via DigiD.

Using your own name

You can always take your original name again, even during your marriage or registered partnership. You can apply for this in the municipality where you currently live. In the municipality of Nuenen this can be done through our online form, or make an appointment at the front desk.
